We are interested in developing nanomaterials to help study and manipulate biological systems. Our group synthesizes nanoparticle contrast agents for optical and magnetic resonance imaging, and we are now working on targeting these agents to unique cell receptors for better characterization of diseases such as cancer. In addition, we are focused on coupling these nanocrystals to drug-carrying agents, such as lipid vesicles and bacteriophages, to yield new hybrid materials providing enhanced control over in vivo drug distribution. Our group also synthesizes semiconductor nanowires, and we are beginning to grow nerve cells on biomolecule-passivated nanowire substrates. We intend to study the electrical interactions between nanowires and individual nerve cells in an effort to read the cell's electrical signals.
